Privacy Manifesto

1. Keep It Local

If we hold terabytes of other people's data and lose it, we're at fault. More importantly, it is not ours to hold. People share their photos, documents, and personal information with cloud platforms because it is convenient, not because it feels good.

Not everyone can run a NAS, TrueNAS, or Proxmox box. Even plugging an external drive into a router is rarely simple or usable. The Atha Hub changes that: insert a drive, set it up in the app, and access it across your network on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and SMB-compatible devices. It should feel as clean as Google Drive, but it is yours.

Take photos and they land on the Atha Hub. Create a document and it stays on the Atha Hub. No hub yet? AthaSync enables peer-to-peer collaboration over Bluetooth or LAN, with the hub acting as the master when it is present.

2. Local-First Architecture

Local processing is faster, has no ongoing cloud bill for us, and avoids constant internet usage for you. You still sign in to an Atha account, but it is not cross-checked against a centralized password store. Authentication relies on your device and local context.

AthaSync and core services look for recognized device identifiers, network context, and other factors so a matching username/password on the same Wi-Fi is not enough. Two-factor authentication is part of the baseline.

3. Edge Computing Is Ready

Modern devices can do serious work. If a chip can run demanding games locally, it can absolutely handle encrypted storage, automation, and AI-assisted workflows on-device. The edge is ready, and we intend to use it.

4. Breach Transparency

Data breaches are frequent, and too often brushed off. Companies collect vast amounts of personal data and delay disclosure. That delay hurts people.

We believe users deserve immediate, honest communication when something goes wrong, and we design AthaOS to minimize the amount of data that could ever be exposed.

5. Your Data, Your Exit

If you leave AthaOS Labs, your data is already on your storage. Exporting is straightforward and not gated by our infrastructure. We cannot and should not track daily active usage beyond app store downloads or website visits.

6. No Subscriptions for Hardware You Own

AthaOS Labs does not sell subscriptions for features already inside your devices. We believe in the right to repair and in honoring the hardware you bought.

Open-source communities have proven what is possible. But today these tools often feel fragmented. We want them to feel unified and easy. Local-first should not be a compromise.
